HOUSTON, Texas — Two athletes finished in a tie for second on Sunday at The Chevron Championship after American Nelly Korda won by a whopping five shots over the rest of the field with a four-day total of 18-under.

Thai native Patty Tavatanakit’s short game looked virtually unstoppable this week, as the two-time LPGA Tour winner was on a 55-hole bogey-free streak that began at the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro and stretched until the 13th hole at Memorial Park Golf Course on Saturday.

The 2021 Chevron Championship winner only made two bogeys throughout the week in Houston, Texas, leading the field in that statistic. Tavatanakit additionally led the field in putts, only needing 104 total to get around this property in 13-under. She was also tied for first in sand saves and second in driving distance, averaging 276.9 yards off the tee at a venue that was heavily saturated with April rain early in the week.

The T2 performance is Tavatanakit’s second consecutive top-five finish on the LPGA Tour, as the former UCLA Bruin tied for fifth at the JM Eagle LA Championship last week at El Caballero Country Club. It’s also both her strongest showing in a major championship and in an LPGA event since she came in third at the 2024 Amundi Evian Championship in Evian-les-Bains, France, two seasons ago.

And while Tavatanakit would have loved to be the one splashing down into the water just off the 18th green at Memorial Park on Sunday in Houston, this type of result, with what she deemed less than her A-game, should give the 26-year-old a pretty hefty confidence boost as she looks ahead to the remainder of the 2026 season.

“It just shows, regardless of where you are with your game, there is always room to figure it out,” said Tavatanakit. “There is always an opportunity to make something happen. I was really far away from perfection this week. To be able to finish second, it proves I don't need to be perfect.”

Ruoning Yin finished at 13-under alongside Tavatanakit, tying for second for the second straight year at The Chevron Championship, having fallen to Mao Saigo in a five-way playoff in 2025.

The Chinese major champion, who claimed her first major victory at the 2023 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club’s Lower Course, is the first person since Suzann Pettersen at the 2007 and 2008 Chevron Championships to finish in a tie for second in the same major tournament in back-to-back seasons.

This year is now the fourth consecutive season in which the 23-year-old has finished in the top five of at least one major championship since becoming an LPGA Tour member in 2022. The five-time LPGA Tour winner’s T2 showing is her best result since she tied for second at the 2025 Black Desert Resort Championship presented by Greater Zion, just a week after she tied for second at The Club at Carlton Woods.

Yin gave a lot of credit to improvements in her putting this week as a big reason for her success at an unfamiliar property, one whose main defense against the world’s top players is its severely undulating greens. But she put a premium on patience at Memorial Park, and at the end of the day, that’s likely what Yin will remember most from this excellent performance at the year’s first major championship.

“I think me and my team were talking about how patience helps, because I think early this year or last year, I was really stressed because I think I can be better, but I'm not, so it's kind of stressing me out a little bit,” said Yin. “I think you just got to believe that your time will come, and I think it's coming. If it's not this week, it's next week.”

Both Tavatanakit and Yin are next scheduled to compete in the Mizuho Americas Open, which is being contested this year at Mountain Ridge Country Club in West Caldwell, N.J., from May 7-10.
